First layer, I covered the canvas as quick as possible with transparent color prior to moving to the longer thoughtful process of laying the thicker paint.
Alla Prima or Al Fresco?  I don't know about you, but I tend to mix up the meaning of these two Italian terms.

Alla Prima or "at once"  is a form of expressive oil painting wet on wet where the piece is completed in one session from start to finish.  Unlike painting in layers and allowing it to dry in between.

I took a leap going for such a large painting alla prima.

Often, painters labor on pieces for days, weeks and months and it's exhilarating to be in the zone on occasion  as this piece flowed for me.    Oh, and the meaning of  Al Fresco?  In the fresh air; outdoors: dining alfresco :)

Great article Nadia! I didn't realize the difference between alla prima and al fresco. Thanks for sharing. You made me curious how "en plein air" fit into this. I googled it and apparently al fresco and plein air are the same thing, I had never heard al fresco used before. Thanks for making me a more informed painter! Also, love your colorful landscape...so very beautiful and eye-catching!

Thank you Sharon for you comment! I am glad you enjoyed it. Now that I am painting alla prima, I believe it has stuck :) Looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful paintings.
